What is a silly goose walk?
A silly goose walk is a walk with no goal except going.
Not a workout. Not "getting your steps in." You put on shoes, you go outside, you walk around for a bit, you come back. If you did it, it counts. If you did it in sweats with unbrushed hair, you're just a silly goose. It still counts.
Where the name comes from
I built gaggle for my friends and me. We walk every day, and we wanted a way to walk with each other even when we couldn't be in the same place. We've always called each other silly geese, because we are. We're just silly girls going for silly goose walks. And then it clicked: a gaggle is a group of geese, and we're a group of geese. So I built a walking app for exactly that: walking with your friends in a fun way, with silly goose energy, where accountability is the fun part.
Because accountability doesn't have to be serious. It doesn't have to be tied to numbers. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. It can just be your friends noticing you went, and noticing when you didn't.
The rules (there are no rules)
- No pace. You set the pace. Do what feels right to you, silly goose.
- No distance. You pick how long you want to be outside. Five minutes or an hour, it's your call, and nobody's penalized for picking. You just have to get outside.
- No intense goals, unless you want them. Your goal can be "go outside." It can be 5,000 steps. It can be 10,000. If you want more accountability, opt into the step counter and the Flock leaderboard and compete with other silly geese around the world. If you don't, that's okay too. You customize it; it's all based on you.
- No productivity. You can listen to a podcast if you want, but you don't have to learn anything or get anything done out there. Going outside is the thing.
- Honking is encouraged. At friends who haven't gone yet. Gently.
Why it works when "exercise" doesn't
Every fitness thing I ever quit, I quit because it had a number attached, and eventually the number got worse. A silly goose walk has no number unless you want one. It can't get worse. The only way to miss is to not go, and even then, gaggle doesn't shame you. It just asks if you'll waddle tomorrow.
When the bar is "go outside for a bit," you go outside most days. And most days is the whole secret. Not the long walk. The short, repeated, slightly silly one.
How to start one with your friends
- Download gaggle (App Store / Google Play).
- Pick two to ten people. Not a group chat of forty. A gaggle.
- Everyone picks their own goal, whether that's getting their steps in or just getting outside.
- When you walk, tap "I waddled." Everyone in your gaggle gets a notification that you went.
- When someone hasn't gone, honk them. Gently. Lovingly. Not "you should walk." More "get up, I love you, go outside."
- Your gaggle gets celebrated on the leaderboards, where you can see other gaggles and compete with flocks worldwide, by averages, not totals, so a gaggle of three can beat a gaggle of ten. And if your group wants some friendly competition, opt into the step-count leaderboard too.
