Apps like Finch for people who want to get outside
The best apps like Finch, if what you want is Finch's kindness but for getting outside: gaggle (walking with friends), Pikmin Bloom (walking as a game), Habitica (habits with a party), Zombies, Run! (walks with a story), Forest (less phone), Fabulous (routines), Streaks (simple habit checklists) and Daylio (mood tracking). Below is what each one is good at, who it's for, and how I'd pick.
If you have a Finch, you know. The little bird, the tiny goals, the way it says "you did a thing today" and means it. Finch taught a lot of us that an app can be kind. It's one of the reasons gaggle exists.
But Finch lives on your couch. It's a self-care app, and self-care is mostly indoors. Somewhere around month three I noticed I was doing my daily "drink water" and "take three breaths" tasks and hadn't been outside since Tuesday. My bird was thriving. I was not.
So here are apps with Finch's energy, cozy, gamified, no shame, for the part of your life that happens outside, or with other people, or both. (If you're only deciding between Finch and gaggle, I wrote a full gaggle vs Finch comparison.)
The quick version
- Want to walk more, with friends: gaggle
- Want walking to feel like a game: Pikmin Bloom
- Want friends to keep you honest on any habit: Habitica
- Want a reason to keep going on a walk: Zombies, Run!
- Your phone is what keeps you inside: Forest
- Want a guided routine: Fabulous
- Want a plain checklist, no characters: Streaks
- Want to see what actually makes you feel better: Daylio
gaggle (walking, with friends)
This is mine, so take it with salt. gaggle is a walking app that's really about friends. You and your gaggle, up to 6 people (10 with gaggle+), each commit to a daily walk. You show up, check it off, keep your streak, earn petals, and grow a little garden. If a friend skips, you send them a honk. No calories, no weigh-ins, no step leaderboard unless your group wants one. It's the closest thing to "Finch, but my friends can see it, and it's about going outside." Free on iPhone and Android.
Pikmin Bloom (walking, as a game)
Pikmin Bloom is a walking game from the people who made Pokémon GO. You grow little Pikmin by walking, and you plant flowers along the path you take, so your walks leave a trail on the map. You can add friends and send each other postcards. It's the most purely playful app on this list, and it's genuinely cute. It's built around the game more than around showing up for each other, so it works best if collecting things is what gets you moving.
Habitica (habits, as a video game)
Habitica turns your to-do list into a role-playing game: habits give you experience points, missed habits hurt your character, and you can join parties with friends to fight bosses together. It's the most social of the big habit apps, and the party mechanic is a real accountability tool. The vibe is 8-bit dungeon rather than cozy bird, which is either exactly your thing or very much not.
Zombies, Run! (walks, with a story)
Zombies, Run! is an audio adventure you listen to while you move. Each mission is a story episode, and you're a character in it, so you keep going partly because you want to know what happens next. Despite the name, you can walk it. It's not cozy in the Finch sense, but if podcasts are already the only reason you go outside, this is the same trick with a plot.
Forest (focus, as a tree)
Forest grows a tree while you leave your phone alone. Leave early and it dies. It's the Finch of screen time: one tiny mechanic, a lot of feelings. Not a walking app, but if the thing keeping you inside is your phone, this is the lever.
Fabulous (routines, with a coach)
Fabulous builds morning and evening routines, one small habit at a time, with a lot of warm illustration and a guided feel. It's the most "program" of the bunch: it wants to walk you through weeks of building a routine. Good if you want structure; a lot if you just want a nudge.
Streaks (habits, as a checklist)
Streaks is a simple habit tracker for iPhone: pick a few habits, tap them when you do them, and watch the streak grow. No pet, no story, no party. It's what Finch would be with all the feelings taken out, which is exactly what some people want. It's solo, so it won't give you the friend part.
Daylio (mood, in two taps)
Daylio is a mood and activity tracker you can fill in with two taps, no writing. Over a few weeks it shows you what actually makes you feel better, and for most people "went for a walk" is embarrassingly high on that list. It's not a motivator, it's a mirror. Pair it with any of the above.
How to pick
- Name the thing that keeps you inside. If it's your phone, Forest. If it's boredom, Pikmin Bloom or Zombies, Run!. If it's that nobody's expecting you, that's the friend problem.
- Decide solo or together. Finch, Streaks, Fabulous and Daylio are solo. gaggle and Habitica are built around other people, and Pikmin Bloom lets you add friends.
- Keep the goal small. The Finch lesson is that tiny, daily and kind beats big and impressive. Pick whichever app makes the smallest version of your goal feel like a win.
Questions people ask
Is there an app like Finch but for exercise?
Not exactly, because most exercise apps are about performance and Finch isn't. The closest in spirit are gaggle, for walking with friends, and Pikmin Bloom, for walking as a game. Both reward showing up rather than how far or fast you went. If you want a wider list of walking apps, here's my roundup of the best walking apps with friends.
Is there a Finch you can do with friends?
Finch has a way to add friends and send each other encouragement, but your goals and your bird are still your own. If you want the whole thing shared, a group that sees whether everyone did their walk today, that's what gaggle is built around.
Can I use these alongside Finch?
Yes. None of them replace Finch, and a lot of people keep Finch for indoor self-care and add one of these for the outside part.
What they have in common
None of these apps are about performance. They're about showing up, in small amounts, often. That's the Finch lesson, and it's the only thing that has ever worked on me: not a bigger goal, a smaller one, and someone (or some bird, or some goose) who notices.
If you only take one thing from this list: get a friend into whatever you pick. Finch alone is lovely. Finch plus one person who asks "did you do your walk?" is a different app entirely. That's the whole idea behind gaggle.
